Few cities in the world encompass the richness and variety of Barcelona. A city of art and architecture of Miró, Picasso, and Gaudi it is also a beach city, an ancient city, as well as a vibrant modern city. Surrounded by hills, with aerial trams that crisscross the
city, it pulsates with street life. A photographer can explore the life along the legendary Las Ramblas, wander the beaches, photograph the nightclubs, pass through the winding alleys of the old city, or visit Barcelona's remarkable parks.
MODERNIST COLORS and DESIGNS
Many outsiders forget that Barcelona, while being one of the largest cities in Spain, is also the cultural heart of Catalonia. The people of Barcelona are fiercely proud of their unique cultural heritage and have throughout history made efforts to assert their independence. Catalan remains their preferred language. The vibrant colors of the city reflect the artistic and architectural traditions that make Barcelona so unique. It is a city of visual exuberance.
One of the reasons that make Barcelona a different city is undoubtedly the works of Gaudí and the modernist artists. Some sights are really unforgettable, such as the variations that may take the colors of Casa Batlló according to the time of year or the hour of the day. For the modern artists, colors are just as important as the materials and design. Every detail counts in the composition of the work.
Modernism, or Arts Décos, is an artistic movement in the beginning of the 20th century that influenced cities all around Europe. The most important architects from that period, are Puig i Cadafalch, Doménech Montaner, and of course Gaudí.
BARCELONA:EXPLORING YOUR VISION
With Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb
This workshop will be about street photography in Barcelona -- using the camera to explore the world of this remarkable city in a direct, spontaneous way. It is a workshop that will emphasize the development of a unique, personal way of seeing and how to edit select and sequence your photographs -- intuitively. Its a workshop open to amateurs and professionals alike.
THE SCHEDULE
There are two basic components of this class: the
spontaneous act of photographing and intuitive editing. The workshop will begin with Alex and Rebecca, a creative team who often edit projects and books together, who will critique each participants past work. By the first afternoon, participants will be out working on their first assignment, which participants will choose. It may be a specific street, plaza, neighborhood, subculture, profession, family or individual; something that you're passionate enough about to return to every day to photograph.
For the rest of the workshop, we will meet in the mornings and critique as a group each participants ongoing work. Throughout the workshop, we will try to build a coherent set of images for each photographer that will begin to represent his or her photographic stance or attitude toward the city of Barcelona. We will view this work as a group at the end of the workshop.
Besides photographing and editing each day, we will view the art and architecture of Barcelona together as a starting point for discussions about color, composition, and the feel of a place -- in this instance, of course, Barcelona.
We will also touch on a variety of topics, including the process of photographing spontaneously and intuitively; how to photograph in cultures other than one's own; the relationship between images (such as the sequencing and juxtaposition of photographs); how to edit intuitively: the practical realities of the magazine and art worlds; the emotional and psychological implications of working in color vs. black and white; the difference between images in a book and images on the wall; how to work with a designer on a book; an introduction to being on press for a book; and how long-term projects can evolve into books and exhibitions.
